Awarded first place for musical setting of new English translation of Catholic Mass.
William Gokelman and David Kauffman awarded first place by NPM Members.
Detroit, MI. July 16, 2010 - The National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) announced today that Mass of Renewal by William Gokelman and David Kauffman of San Antonio, Texas, was voted the winner of a new Mass setting competition sponsored by NPM.
The "Member's Choice!"
Over the last 10 months, more than 160 entries were submitted from which a panel of five independent judges selected four finalists. The final four compositions were sung by and then voted on by all 2,000+ NPM members (choir directors and music ministers) who attended the national convention this summer in Detroit, MI.
Bill Gokelman
“Our hope was to write a musical setting of the mass that wouldn’t get in the way of the prayer experience,” said Bill Gokelman, co-writer of Mass of Renewal and Chairman of the Music department at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX.
Use of Mass
Gokelman and Kauffman’s composition may be sung with various combinations of instruments, including guitar, piano, organ, brass, and even full orchestra. This setting is quite adaptable and can be used by the congregation alone, with the participation of an SATB choir or in a contemporary Youth Mass setting.
Timing
This new English translation of the Catholic Mass will be implemented on the first Sunday of Advent 2011 throughout the English speaking world.
Mass of Renewal will be published by and available through San Antonio based Good For The Soul Music™ as well as other select distribution partners and publishers.
Audio & video samples will join print music samples on this site soon.

What they're saying....
"We attended the NPM National Convention this summer in Detroit in hopes of discovering a New Mass Setting. We were not disappointed.
During the convention, we were exposed to and sang through numerous Revised and New Mass Settings reflecting the new translation to be implemented Advent 2011.
By far the David Kauffman & William Gokelman setting, which was voted upon by the entire convention body, was the most engaging, gifting and easily prayed setting.
We chose that Mass setting as the one we would purchase before it was announced who had composed it and that it was the #1 choice of the entire convention body."
-Sr. Camille Martinez Our Lady Queen of Heaven Lake Charles, LA.

Mass of Renewal composers David Kauffman (L) and Bill Gokelman (R) are congratulated by NPM President J. Michael McMahon.
